It was imports, but one with a familiar face, who played for the Fresno Easter Baseball Classic championship Wednesday night at Clovis West High’s Stan Bledsoe Field.
And it was Santana-Santee (12-6) of the San Diego Section and former Clovis East coach Rigo Ledezma that won 3-1 against Pleasant Grove-Elk Grove (12-3) of the Sac-Joaquin.
Santana is the fourth non-Central Section winner in the tournament’s 48-year history. Others were Merced (1978) of the Sac-Joaquin, El Cerrito (1983) of the North Coast and Beyer-Modesto (1990) of the Sac-Joaquin.
There were 13 non-Central Section teams, most from the Sacramento area, in this year’s 34-team field.
Santana, a suburban San Diego school, was playing 350 miles from home in the final after defeating Clovis 7-0, Sunnyside 10-0, Cosumnes Oaks-Elk Grove 8-2 and, finally, Redwood 11-0 on Wednesday morning – against a 19-0 Rangers team ranked 18th in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.
Pleasant Grove was ranked 17th in the state.
Santana and Pleasant Grove each went 4-0 in the three-day, 34-team tournament’s regular phase.
Santana made an immediate statement Monday night with its victory at three-year reigning Classic champion Clovis, which is 18-3-1 and eighth-ranked in the state.
Clovis went 3-1, closing with a 3-1 homefield win over Reedley. The Pirates had won their first three tournament games.
Pleasant Grove closed the regular phase with a 2-0 win over Edison at Hoover.

The Pleasant Grove Eagles had a Great
season opener game against Davis High School. Pleasant Grove High School is Currently
Ranked 60 in the state by MaxPreps.
Isaiah Crushed a hit to right field, that
hung in the air king enough to be caught at the fence. Definitely
showing that he is a power hitter that will produce runs, or base
running after tag up, if the bases are occupied.
The two teams battled each other with Davis taking the initial lead by 2 to zero.
Isiah was able to produce 2 runs to tie
the game , the first run was produced by again crushing one towards left
field that the center fielder was tracking at full speed, but could not
handle. Isiah than hit a hard dribbler that
went past the shortstop, which produced a run as well.
Please Grove was able to
load the bases in the 8th inning, which included a hit by Isiah.
Shane Elner was able to hit the ball towards second, which produced one
out, but Davis was not able to tag him out at First. Teddy reached home
plate, producing the willing play.
A great opener to watch, validating Isiah's value to the team and the strength of Pleasant Grove Baseball.
To cap off such a great game, the Head
Coach from Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT)was in the stands,
approached Isiah after the game and made him an offer to play baseball
at OIT.
Hopefully, this is the beginning of great things to come.

Tough luck for Devils in Delta baseball opener
By Enterprise staff From page B2 | April 05, 2017
ELK GROVE — There isn’t an easy out in this league.
Despite another brilliant pitching performance from left-handed junior Tyler Mortensen, errors did in Davis High in a 3-2 Delta League-opening baseball loss at Pleasant Grove.
In a pitcher’s duel that went eight innings, Mortensen allowed two hits, walked one and fanned eight in his sterling seven innings on the mound.
But it was a couple of last-inning errors with hard-luck reliever Ryan Holgate on the mound that did in the locals.
“It was a tough loss for us,” said DHS coach Dan Ariola, who lost this one to his old Blue Devil colleague, skipper Rob Rinaldi. “I thought we competed well early. Couldn’t quite get the big hit. Left some kids on early.”
As Mortensen was mowing down nine Pleasant Grove hitters in row to start the game, Davis squandered chances in their first and second innings.
The Devils (7-2, 0-1) left the bases loaded in the first, then had two on and one out an inning later. No love either time.
Finally, in the third, DHS broke through on Eagle starter Connell Ellner.
Tyler Mundy opened with a single. After two were out, John Lagattuta extended the frame with a walk. Then Nick Vogt lashed the first Ellner pitch he saw into the great beyond for a two-run triple.
The way Mortensen was pitching, it looked like more than enough.
But an error on an Isiah Lissade drive to center was cashed in when Amaury Reed’s single broke up Mortensen’s no-hitter. A batter later, a sacrifice fly by Jacob Harris ended the shutout.
The Eagles tied things when a lead-off, sixth-inning walk to Lissade was converted into a score.
Pleasant Grove got one more runner off Mortensen, Caleb Clausen tapping out a seventh-inning single. But he was immediately thrown out attempting to steal.
Davis had made noise in the top of the frame, but with two on and one out, PGHS forced the Devils to hit into a double play.
Since the fifth inning, Evan Cogswell had been on the mound for the Eagles and saved his best inning for last, downing the Devils 1-2-3 to set up the unearned victory run in the bottom of the eighth.
“Tyler threw really well. When we got that lead, we really needed to add on,” Ariola pointed out. “Pleasant Grove made some nice plays. It was the kind of game you’d expect in the Delta League. Everyone’s solid. At least six good teams.
“Every night you have to be able to bounce back.”
Davis will now see if they can do that.
On Thursday, this time Pleasant Grove calls on Davis. Game time is 4 p.m. Ariola says he hasn’t decided between Ryan Bell or Holgate as his starting pitcher.
Then on Friday, it’s a 7 p.m. contest at Sacramento City College with Sheldon.
Beginning next Monday and going through April 13, Davis High returns to the Boras Classic at McAuliffe Field, adjacent Sacramento State.
The Devils won the north division of the tournament before falling in the state championship game to Mira Costa a month later.
